We all know that the internet is full of hoax news and articles. Can you count the number of calls and messages you received from your relatives showing concern over any fake news they saw or read on the internet? Countless I will say.
But why is it that our elder relatives and friends and family are most affected by such fake news? I think I have an answer to this.
According to the latest research, it is the older people who tend to believe the fake news is appearing on the internet more than the younger generation.
According to the research done by the researches of the New York and Princeton Universities, the fake or hoax news and articles are shared mot by the people of age 65 and above.
They conducted this research by social media usage, and they found that the sharing is done irrespective of gender, education, income or even the number of times the article has been shared.
The research was conducted by dividing the different age group people into different groups.
As per the research, the 65 and above aged people shared more than twice the fake article in comparison with the other group of age 45 – 64 and shared nearly seven times as much as the youngest age group of 18 – 29.
Although the researchers did not provide us with an answer as to why they tend to share fake news so much. But they proposed two theories.
The old people welcomed the internet in their late years, so they are not much aware of the usage. Being the stubborn selves in their late years, they don’t give much on learning.
